The film, or Veer Zaara (2004), is the story about a man named Zaara. He meets with his childhood friend, Ayesha Farooq, who is living in the United States following the partition of Pakistan and India. She comes to find that her father greatly desires to reunite with her. However; he can't leave for that reason because of his position as an Imam at an Islamic establishment in India. The two take off on a journey back to show him but end up instead meeting cousins who take them on an adventure through Pakistan and India before returning back home with a close call from Ayesha's father before finally reuniting with him later on their return journey. The film started production in 2003 and was released on 31 August 2004. It was nominated for three National Film Awards and won two, the other being Best Actress for Ayesha Kapoor. The original soundtrack was composed by Khalid Ahmed with lyrics by Waris Shah. It is the fifth highest-grossing Pakistani film of all time, and has been screened in more than 50 countries worldwide. The songs of the film were well received and became very popular among females of all ages. The film received positive reviews from critics and is listed among the most notable of 2004. The film was released on 31 August 2004, in more than 50 countries of the world. Ayesha Kapoor won the Best Actress award at the Pakistan Academy Awards ceremony held in 2005. It received high critical acclaim and is considered one of the best films in Pakistani cinema history. It was filmed in Lahore and the Bala Hisar Fort in Jhelum, and it is set against the backdrop of the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan, specifically the 1947 partition of India and the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war. It grossed $4,950,000 in its entire run outside of Pakistan. The film received positive reviews from critics and is listed among the most notable of 2004. "Veer Zaara" was ranked #68 in the "100 Best Films of World Cinema" list in 2004 by "Sight & Sound".
